The Door at the End of the Garden

The Door at the End of the Garden

An adventure of the 3DVR girls

Four friends, one small brass key, and a door that had been waiting a very long time to be found.

1. The Key in the Lavender

1. The Key in the Lavender

One sunrise, the garden muse was picking lavender when something bright winked up at her from the leaves. A brass key, small and warm, as if it had been waiting for her all along. She held it up to the light, and the others came running through the garden gate. “Keys mean doors,” said Kayla. “And doors,” said Muse, already sketching, “mean stories.”

2. The Trail of Turquoise Stones

Kayla led the way into the forest, because trails are her language. Past the creek and under the tall trees, they found them: small turquoise stones, one every few steps, too even to be an accident. By the old oak with the carved star, the key on its cord grew warm in the muse's hand. “We are close,” she said. “It knows the way.”

3. The Door in the Cliff

The stones ended at the cliffs, where the path gave up and the sea took over. And there it was: a little wooden door set into the rock, no bigger than a cupboard, its brass knob blackened by salt. The blonde stepped forward, took the key, and turned it. The lock clicked like a small, happy secret, and warm light spilled out around the edges.

4. The Cove at the End of the World

Behind the door was a stair of smooth stone, and below it a hidden cove: calm turquoise water, a tree hung with lights, a telescope older than all of them, and a flat rock made for picnics. They ate as the sun went down and the first stars came out, and Muse drew the cove into her book so they would never lose it. “Some treasures are places,” the garden muse said. “And some doors only open for friends.”

The End

The End

The key hangs by the garden gate now, polished bright from use. Because everyone knows the cove was only the first door. The end... until the next key.
